Managers—Blame Yourselves For Bad Business

New author blows the top off big business management

Queensland, AUSTRALIA—Australian business leaders whose companies have been suffering during the recession should take a close look in the mirror before pointing fingers elsewhere.

According to local author and business expert Peter Rowe, businesses can start turning losses into profits by identifying where the real problems exist.

“If your company is suffering from poor workplace morale, sharp declines in productivity or struggling to compete in the marketplace, you—as the person at the top—can first blame yourself, then your employees,” says Rowe, author of Solving The People Puzzle.

The next step, says Rowe, is to hire a team that will make you proud:

“Many times business owners think their staff is expendable, that it’s okay to have a high turnover of employees who perform minor tasks. Business owners must take as great care in hiring the right people for junior positions as they would for upper level positions.”

As Managing Director of Profitune, Rowe has more than 30 years of experience in business management. He argues that companies need to change their focus from searching everywhere for the right people to learning how to attract them.

“Great workers are out there, but research shows that they could be as few as 20 percent of the labor market. If you want to attract the best and the brightest, then you absolutely have to personify the highest ideals. If not, then you’re doomed to spend your entire business life headhunting for the perfect people.”

Rowe says that companies can begin attracting highly motivated, innovative team players today by doing the following:

  1. Alter your business from the top down—be the change you want to see in your employees
  2. Come up with a new business plan that incorporates everyone’s role into the system
  3. Encourage new ideas from your employees and implement them whenever possible
